Our history
The Eastern Gauteng Chamber of Commerce and Industry (EGCCI) has been a business stalwart for close to 100 years and during that time has enjoyed huge growth.
Founded in 1917 as the Springs Chamber of Commerce, EGCCI hold the unique position of being the first Chamber in the country to have attracted industrialists to join its fold of commercial enterprises. This was way back in 1950. It was the second Chamber in the country, in 1987, to establish a Business Watch, following closely in the footsteps of the Johannesburg Chamber.
In March 2009, the Springs Chamber of Commerce and Industry was substituted with Eastern Gauteng Chamber of Commerce and Industry. This decision was made as a result of Government deciding to create a sixth Metro. The Ekurhuleni Metro was established in 2001, consisting of Alberton, Germiston, Kempton Park, Edenvale, Boksburg, Brakpan, Benoni, Springs and Nigel.
The Springs Chamber decided that it would be more representative in substituting its name to the Eastern Gauteng Chamber of Commerce and Industry to accommodate its members in Springs, Nigel and Brakpan.
Our Strategy
We are intentional with our members and even more so with our plan to uplift and strengthen our business community. We purposefully get invovled in :
- Local Metro and Provincial Government
- Political Forums
- South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI)
- Ekurhuleni Business Association
to bind together both business leadership and labourer so that our region is attractive to potential investors and innovators alike. We believe that relational networking across multiple levels and spheres will help us achieve our objectives and therefore we partner with our members to invest resources , time and influence to this end.
